School Choice Information

Dear Parent (Guardian):

The Cherokee County School District Board of Trustees "School Choice/Assignment" policy allows parents to request transfers for their students to other schools within the district according to the following guidelines:

*Each student will be assigned to a school that serves his/her legal place of residence determined by the board for the current school year.

*Students may transfer to a school of choice within the district as long as the student-to-teacher ratio does not exceed a number to be determined by the district.

*Students in the assigned attendance area will be given first priority for school assignment.

*Students must provide their own transportation if they attend school outside of their assigned attendance area.

*All requests for transfer will be granted on a space available and first-come first-serve basis. These requests will be accepted for 5K through grade 12.

If you would like to request a transfer for your student, please complete a "Request to Attend School Outside Attendance Zone/Assignment" at the school you wish your student to attend. The form will be completed in your presence and the date and time recorded. These requests will be accepted beginning Monday, February 3 through Friday, February 28, 2020. No requests will be considered after the closing date, with the exception of extraordinary circumstances. You will be notified in writing by April 1, 2020 regarding the status of your transfer request.

A "Request to Attend School Outside Attendance Zone/Assignment" is necessary for the following:

*4-K students currently attending a school outside their attendance zone who wish to remain in that school

*Students who wish to attend a school outside their attendance zone (initial transfer)

*Students who wish to return to a school outside their attendance zone. (Example: Transferred for one year, went to zoned school for second year and wish to return to out of attendance zoned school.)

A "Request to Attend School Outside Attendance Zone/Assignment" is not required for the groups listed below:

*Students approved to attend an out of attendance zone school for the previous year. (As long as there is space available, they will be assigned to the schools they currently attend.)

*Rising sixth grade students will be assigned as follows:

Elementary School to Middle School Transition

Ewing Middle = Alma, Corinth, Draytonville, and Mary Bramlett

Gaffney Middle = BD Lee, Goucher, Limestone Central, Grassy Pond, Luther Vaughn, and Northwest.

Blacksburg Middle = Blacksburg Elementary

Middle School to High School Transition

Gaffney High = Ewing Middle, Gaffney Middle

Blacksburg High = Blacksburg Middle

Students who are returning to the school in their attendance zone do not need to complete a request form; however, please let your current school know so that records can be sent to the appropriate school during the summer.

We are pleased to be able to offer school choice to parents in Cherokee County. If you have any questions regarding your student's current status, or if you need additional information, please talk with your student's guidance department or principal.
